Skijoring is an ancient sport where a person on skis is pulled with high speed over snow. From 1928 on, horses without a rider were used. Soon after, motorsport enthusiasts followed. In 1938, for the first time the skiers were pulled by motorized vehicles. Ice races for motorbikes and cars then followed. From 1937 to 1974, the Ice Race in Zell am See was a mixture of skijoring and car races on a frozen lake and the runways of nearby Alpen Airport. The newly relaunched and renamed GP Ice Race brought back the spectacle in January 2019. Its future now appears tenuous.
