Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) is recalling ~43,000 2021-2023 model-year Mustang Mach E vehicles for powertrain [primary drive unit or PDU- AutoCrat] failures and 2024-2026 Mustang and 2025-2026 Mustang GTD models for defective wiper and washer systems. All told ~111,000 Mustangs are affected. The most serious safety defect is a powertrain failure (NHTSA recall 26V417 or 26V-417, Ford 26S50) that results from Mexican supplied Borg Warner for the 2021-2023 Mustang Mach E. The rear-wheel drive vehicles a rear differential pinion shaft may fracture without warning. “In the event of a differential pinion shaft failure, the customer may experience a loss of motive power and/or unintended vehicle movement with Park requested if the parking brake is not applied. A loss of motive power or unintended vehicle movement increases the risk of a crash,” Ford said in the mandatory safety defect recall filing made public by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) this morning.
“Metallurgical analysis has determined differential pinion shaft fracture occurs due to bending fatigue. The root cause of the bending fatigue remains under investigation. Identification of any warning that can occur: The customer may experience a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) in the instrument panel as well as possible diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P174E, P0A2F, P019C and or P27B2,” Ford said.
Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their vehicle’s rear differential assembly repaired or replaced as necessary. There will be no charge for this service as required by Federal Safety regulations.
Mailing of interim owner notification letters is expected to begin today 13 July 2026. However the mailing remedy owner notification letters is not expected to begin 28 December 2026. The date VINs are planned to be searchable is 28 December 2026.
