Hertz and Penske Debut Special Edition Mustang GT

The latest airport rental GT includes a quad-tip exhaust system and an unspecified ECU change, a 3.55 final drive axle ratio and Brembo brakes.

The Hertz Corporation and Penske Racing introduced the special edition “Hertz Penske GT.” The Ford Mustang GT with a 5-liter V8 engine joins other muscle cars in the so-called Hertz ‘Adrenaline Collection’ and has performance upgrades for renters. The limited edition pony car is available at some U.S. airport locations following its Firecracker 250 Nascar race debut at Daytona International Speedway today.

The Hertz Penske GT joins other Hertz vehicles that started with Carroll Shelby in 1966 with the GT350H in the Hertz Rent-A-Racer program. From there, Hertz developed a 40th anniversary Shelby GT-H in 2006 and a custom Chevrolet Corvette ZHZ in 2009. The latest Mustang GT  is available with other cars such as the Ford Mustang GT Premium, Chevrolet Camaro SS hardtop and convertible, Corvette Convertible and Dodge Challenger R/T.

The airport rental GT includes a quad-tip exhaust system and an unspecified ECU change, a 3.55 final drive axle ratio and Brembo brakes. In the show but no go department, interior changes see the fitting of Recaro racing seats (undoubtedly better than the cramped airline commode the renter just vacated), custom floor mats and doorsills, as well as Ford’s controversial and distracted driving enabling “touchscreen entertainment system” with GPS and a back-up camera.

On the outside of the latest Mustang pony car package, there is a black exterior with yellow racing stripes, a reference to the original rental Mustang GT in the over-hyped, under-detailed Hertz release with no horsepower, torque, fuel economy or performance numbers that was far below usual Penske racing standards.

Then there’s our favorite marketing babble absurdity, which might hold the course record this year – a “Hertz Faux Gas Cap” in the GT500 borrowed rear valence.

Last January, Hertz and Penske Racing entered into a multi-year agreement with Hertz as the 2013 primary sponsor for select races on the number 22 Penske Racing car competing in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Nationwide Series.
