When Smartphones in multiple vehicles were connected to a cloud server to provide information about other vehicles, the results were better, than with a stand alone system. Both showed results though.

Honda Motor Company conducted public-road testing of its new traffic congestion minimization technology in Indonesia and claims it verified its effectiveness in delaying the development of congestion, and improving fuel efficiency by more than 20%.

The public-road testing in Indonesia from September 2012 through February 2013 on a toll road between Ulujami and Pondok Ranji using an app that helped drivers adjust speeds to the surrounding vehicles. Traffic congestion is caused by the disorderly flow of the traffic, so to minimize congestion, the driver of each vehicle needs to go with the flow so to speak.

Honda developed a Smartphone app that changes the colors of the display to help the user to check at a glance whether his/her driving is aligned.  The computer program monitors the pattern of acceleration and deceleration and determines if it is likely to create traffic congestion. If so, the app provides support to aligning driving behaviors.

In addition to minimizing traffic congestion, the app is expected to improve the safety and fuel efficiency of the user’s vehicle and several hundred vehicles operating on the same roads.

Honda said it would continue development of new functions,  including one that employs an on-board device to provide the users with information about possible congested areas based on the actual amount of traffic and driving patterns. Honda also said it would develop a function that supports riding/driving aligned through the use of audio and vibration alerts for motorcycles and other types of vehicles.
