Infiniti VC-T – Variable Compression Engine Production Ready?

AutoInformed.comInfiniti will show a VC-T engine (Variable Compression-Turbocharged), which it claims is the world’s first production-ready one. The advanced internal combustion engine debuts on September 29 at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, aka Mondial de l’Automobile.

“VC-T technology is a step change for Infiniti,” said Roland Krueger, president of Infiniti Motor Company. “It is a revolutionary next-step in optimizing the efficiency of the internal combustion engine. This engine delivers the power of a high-performance 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine with a high level of efficiency at the same time.”

VC-T technology significant because engines are no longer limited by a fixed compression ratio. The VC-T engine technology raises or lowers the height the pistons reach; the stroke. The displacement of the engine changes and the compression ratio can vary anywhere between 8:1 (for high performance) and 14:1 (for high efficiency). The engine control logic automatically applies the optimum ratio, depending on the driving circumstances.

VC-T technology delivers multiple customer benefits including significantly reduced fuel consumption and emissions, greatly reduced noise and vibration levels. It is also lighter and more compact than comparable conventional engines.

It’s the beginning of a perfect lap. AutoInformed has an editorial philosophy that loves transportation machines of all kinds while promoting critical thinking about the future use of cars and trucks. Zino builds AutoInformed from his background in automotive journalism starting at Hearst Publishing in New York City on Motor and MotorTech Magazines and car testing where he reviewed hundreds of vehicles in his decade-long stint as the Detroit Bureau Chief of Road & Track magazine.
