Cadillac said today that it is in the process of crafting  a forthcoming Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) race car. The Cadillac Project GTP race car will be unveiled this summer and make its debut in competition at the Rolex 24 At Daytona in January 2023. As such this will be the future of Cadillac Racing. The Cadillac GTP race car will be co-developed by Cadillac Racing, Design and race car manufacturer Dallara. The prototype will have a new Cadillac engine package working in conjunction with the GTP common hybrid system.* (AutoInformed: Daytona This Weekend Starts 2022 IMSA Racing Season; Corvette Racing at Daytona – Same or Different?)

The announcement comes less than a month after Ford Performance said in Daytona that an all-new Mustang GT3 race car will compete in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) 2024 race season, including the 24 Hours of Daytona.

The new Mustang effort, announced in advance of this weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, will be a joint program between Ford Performance and racing collaborator Multimatic Motorsports. This means Ford will race against Porsche 911s and Mercedes AMG GTs, among others including Cadillac.

Ford has been endurance racing for 58 years of global endurance, including NASCAR and Australian Supercars today. Lately on this side of the pond, it’s more involved with personal and commercial-use trucks.

The latest Ford racing program will have both a two-car factory-backed IMSA GTD Pro works team managed by Multimatic, as well as customer Mustang race cars for the GTD class starting at Daytona in 2024. The new Mustang GT3 racer will be powered by a Ford 5.0-liter Coyote-based V8 engine developed by Ford Performance and built by M-Sport of Cumbria, England.

Last year, Cadillac said that it would compete in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and Automobile Club de l’Ouest or ACO Grand Touring Prototype category in 2023 with a fourth-generation Cadillac V-Series prototype. Notably, this will mark the brand’s return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans after 21 years. “While the new race car will take into account IMSA and ACO regulations, Cadillac’s brand characteristics will be instantly recognizable, many of which are seen on our V-Series vehicles today,” claimed Chris Mikalauskas, lead exterior creative designer, Cadillac. “It will artistically combine form and function to influence the development of the forthcoming race car. Elements of Cadillac’s brand DNA, such as vertical lighting and floating blades, will be present throughout,” Mikalauskas said.

*Through a deal with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) announced last summer, LMDh prototypes and Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) prototypes will be eligible to race head-to-head in the WeatherTech Championship GTP class beginning with the 61st Rolex 24 At Daytona next January. Likewise, both prototypes may compete in FIA World Endurance Championship races including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
