Ferrari 458 Speciale Debuts at Frankfurt Motor Show

Zero to 100 km/hour in a mere 3 seconds claimed, 0-200 km/h in 9.1s.

Ferrari debuts the 458 Speciale, a performance version of its already fast and technically sophisticated V8-powered 458 Italia and Spider models at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The Speciale will debut active aerodynamic panels in the front and rear, which balances downforce and reduces drag. This makes the 458 Speciale the most aerodynamically efficient production car in Ferrari history, the Fiat owned sports car maker claims.

Ferrari also said the super car will have its most powerful V8 ever at ~600 horsepower (4.495 liters in displacement or 274 cubic inches) with a specific power output of 133 hp/liter – the highest ever achieved by a road-going naturally aspirated engine.

The Ferrari Styling Center led the project in cooperation with (who else) Pininfarina.

Ferrari says the Speciale can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3 seconds (0-200 km/h in 9.1) and it also clocked a lap time of just 1’23″5 at the famed Fiorano Circuit on custom Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires. Lateral acceleration of 1.33 g from a response time of 0.060 seconds are also both the highest ever achieved by a street Ferrari.

The technology used in the vehicle dynamics subsystems is said to give the driver instant confidence and control at high speeds, natural power oversteer management and precise response to commands.

Another claimed technical innovation in the 458 Speciale is the Side Slip angle Control system (SSC), which makes it easier to achieve car control at the considerably high limits because of a new algorithm. SSC performs instant-to-instant analysis of the car’s side slip, comparing it with the target, then optimizing both torque management (via integration with F1-Trac traction control) and torque distribution between the two wheels via integration with the E-Diff electronic differential.

We will have to wait and see what Porsche comes up with for its home country Frankfurt auto show.

He is a member of APA, IMPA and the Midwest Automotive Press Assn. He also brings an historical perspective while citing their contemporary relevance of the work of legendary auto writers such as Ken Purdy, Jim Dunne or Jerry Flint, or writers such as Red Smith, Mark Twain, Thomas Jefferson – all to bring perspective to a chaotic automotive universe. Above all, decades after he first drove a car, Zino still revels in the sound of the exhaust as the throttle is blipped during a downshift and the driver’s rush that occurs when the entry, apex and exit points of a turn are smoothly and swiftly crossed. It’s the beginning of a perfect lap. AutoInformed has an editorial philosophy that loves transportation machines of all kinds while promoting critical thinking about the future use of cars and trucks. Zino builds AutoInformed from his background in automotive journalism starting at Hearst Publishing in New York City on Motor and MotorTech Magazines and car testing where he reviewed hundreds of vehicles in his decade-long stint as the Detroit Bureau Chief of Road & Track magazine. Zino has also worked in Europe, and Asia – now the largest automotive market in the world with China at its center.
