Ferrari debuts the 458 Speciale, a performance version of its already fast and technically sophisticated V8-powered 458 Italia and Spider models at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The Speciale will debut active aerodynamic panels in the front and rear, which balances downforce and reduces drag. This makes the 458 Speciale the most aerodynamically efficient production car in Ferrari history, the Fiat owned sports car maker claims.
Ferrari also said the super car will have its most powerful V8 ever at ~600 horsepower (4.495 liters in displacement or 274 cubic inches) with a specific power output of 133 hp/liter – the highest ever achieved by a road-going naturally aspirated engine.
Ferrari says the Speciale can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3 seconds (0-200 km/h in 9.1) and it also clocked a lap time of just 1’23″5 at the famed Fiorano Circuit on custom Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires. Lateral acceleration of 1.33 g from a response time of 0.060 seconds are also both the highest ever achieved by a street Ferrari.
The technology used in the vehicle dynamics subsystems is said to give the driver instant confidence and control at high speeds, natural power oversteer management and precise response to commands.
Another claimed technical innovation in the 458 Speciale is the Side Slip angle Control system (SSC), which makes it easier to achieve car control at the considerably high limits because of a new algorithm. SSC performs instant-to-instant analysis of the car’s side slip, comparing it with the target, then optimizing both torque management (via integration with F1-Trac traction control) and torque distribution between the two wheels via integration with the E-Diff electronic differential.
We will have to wait and see what Porsche comes up with for its home country Frankfurt auto show.
