The Ford Mustang GT3 race car, based on the 2024 Mustang Dark Horse, was unveiled today during the centenary celebration on the eve of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. With the reveal, Ford is trying to enter Mustang in to the global FIA GT3 racing category, subject to FIA approval. Ford’s last victory at Le Mans was in 2016 with the Ford GT. Ford also showed a new Ford Performance branding that will now be used on all its racing vehicles.

“Ford and Le Mans are bound together by history. And now we’re coming back to the most dramatic, most rewarding and most important race in the world. It is not Ford versus Ferrari anymore. It is Ford versus everyone. Going back to Le Mans is the beginning of building a global motorsports business with Mustang, just like we are doing with Bronco and Raptor off-road,” claimed Jim Farley, Ford Motor Company CEO.

Ford Performance confirmed it would continue to use two longtime partners, Multimatic and M-Sport, to race in GT. Multimatic, builders of the Ford GT, also involved in the Ford GT race program will help build and support the Mustang GT3s. World Rally Championship partner and two-time championship winning team M-Sport will assemble the Ford Performance-developed 5.4-liter Coyote-based V8 engines.

“This is a very important program and an exciting moment for our organization,” said Proton Competition team principal Christian Ried. “The Mustang is a great brand and this is an important step for our team. We look forward to joining with Ford starting in 2024.”

Ford Performance will also field a two-car factory race program with Mustang GT3 in IMSA’s GTD Pro class. Multimatic Motorsports will manage the program beginning at the 2024 Rolex 24 at Daytona.

He is past president of The International Motor Press Assn, the Detroit Press Club, founding member and first President of the Automotive Press Assn. Above all, decades after he first drove a car, Zino still revels in the sound of the exhaust as the throttle is blipped during a downshift and the driver’s rush that occurs when the entry, apex and exit points of a turn are smoothly and swiftly crossed. It’s the beginning of a perfect lap. AutoInformed has an editorial philosophy that loves transportation machines of all kinds while promoting critical thinking about the future use of cars and trucks. Zino builds AutoInformed from his background in automotive journalism starting at Hearst Publishing in New York City on Motor and MotorTech Magazines and car testing where he reviewed hundreds of vehicles in his decade-long stint as the Detroit Bureau Chief of Road & Track magazine. Zino has also worked in Europe, and Asia – now the largest automotive market in the world with China at its center.
