NHTSA Investigating F-150 Brake Failures

Ford F-Series has been the best-selling truck in America for almost four decades.

The Office of Defects Investigation at NHTSA has received 33 reports alleging brake failures because of a defective master cylinder in model year 2013-2014 Ford F-150 full size pickup trucks with 3.5-liter V6 engines. Four complaints say that the defect resulted in collisions.

This is potentially a huge brake failure recall for Ford Motor on its flagship vehicle because there are an estimated 420,000 units sold in the United States representing ~36% of 2013-2014 F-150 sales

The complaints describe the brake pedal going to the floor with a complete loss of brake effectiveness, brake warning lamp illumination, and/or low or empty master cylinder reservoir fluid level with no visible leakage. Several complaints say repair facilities diagnosed the problem as brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder into the brake booster. Thirty-one (31) of the reports were received in the last 12 months, including 20 in the last 7 months.
