It's only one Elantra complaint, but a serious enough one to open a NHTSA defect probe.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administrating has opened a preliminary defect evaluation on 2012 Hyundai Elantra airbags because of a driver’s complaint of lacerations to his ear or face. On opening the investigation, NHTSA said it appears that the metal component caused a cut to the driver’s ear/face when the side curtain airbag deployed.

About 123,000 Hyundai Elantra models are affected by the NHTSA request for more information about the performance of the driver’s side air curtain after NHTSA received photographs provided by the vehicle owner that showed a metal component sticking out from the left edge of the headliner above the driver’s seat.
