Honda World’s First Company to Reveal Third-party Validated Estimates of Global CO2 Emissions during Product Use

Honda Motor Company said in Japan today that it is the world’s first mobility company to disclose estimated global CO2 emissions during customer use of its motorcycles, automobiles and power products.

The move will likely force other automakers who claim to be green into similar disclosures. A next step could be window or product stickers that list the effects of their use on the environment.

The calculation scope matches with the so-called Scope 3 Category 11 for customer use of sold products, where the amount of CO2 emissions is assumed the largest from the viewpoint of the life cycle of Honda products.

Honda obtained third-party validation of the estimates from Bureau Veritas Japan Company, and disclosed them as what it said was transparent and reliable information in its 2012 Environmental Annual Report published today.

The Scope 3 reporting standard was issued by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) Initiative in October 2011 that resulted from a partnership between the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Resources Institute.

The calculation is under the Scope 3 Category 11 for customer use of sold products, where the amount of CO2 emissions is assumed the largest from the viewpoint of the life cycle of Honda products. Honda obtained third-party validation of the estimates from Bureau Veritas Japan Co., Ltd., and disclosed them as transparent and reliable information in its 2012 Environmental Annual Report published today.

He has automobile testing, marketing, public relations and communications experience. He is past president of The International Motor Press Assn, the Detroit Press Club, founding member and first President of the Automotive Press Assn. Above all, decades after he first drove a car, Zino still revels in the sound of the exhaust as the throttle is blipped during a downshift and the driver’s rush that occurs when the entry, apex and exit points of a turn are smoothly and swiftly crossed. It’s the beginning of a perfect lap. AutoInformed has an editorial philosophy that loves transportation machines of all kinds while promoting critical thinking about the future use of cars and trucks. Zino builds AutoInformed from his background in automotive journalism starting at Hearst Publishing in New York City on Motor and MotorTech Magazines and car testing where he reviewed hundreds of vehicles in his decade-long stint as the Detroit Bureau Chief of Road & Track magazine. Zino has also worked in Europe, and Asia – now the largest automotive market in the world with China at its center.
