GMC says that the 2023 GMC Canyon mid-size truck is the official vehicle of nowhere. No, the expensive truck division of GM wasn’t referring to the well-publicized industry semi-conductor and other shortages induced by Covid that has severely restricted production.

Instead GMC was trying to emphasize the off-road aspects of the mid-size pickup truck. The new Canyon has a redesigned exterior with a standard factory lift and widened track across the lineup, some new technologies and a new interior design. In short, the next gen Canyon is built for traversing off-road terrain. (AutoInformed: GMC Adds Hummer SUV EV. Direct Selling Without Dealers?)

The 2023 Canyon is scheduled to begin initial production in early 2023 with the radical AT4X version that spring. Reservations for the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X Edition 1 are open now, with MSRP starting at $63,3505.  MSRP for other 2023 Canyon trims will start around $40,0005.

“GMC is flexing the might of our off-road muscle,” says GMC Global Vice President Duncan Aldred. “Canyon benefits from key learnings (sic) gained from our AT4 strategy to bring customers the most advanced off-road midsize truck.”

Well, the 2023 Canyon will be the first mid-size truck on the market to offer these claimed segment-first things:

  • Optional under-body cameras1, including front- and rear-facing views underneath the vehicle
  • Optional Head-Up Display
  • Fully digital driver information center
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay2 and Android Auto3 compatibility
  • Optional Google Built-In4 (Google Automotive Services)

AT4X Joins the Off-Road Performance Segment

Canyon AT4X has a higher factory lift than every other Canyon trim. The marketing challenge is to convince people that they need to spend the money for all the expensive modifications. Inspired by the GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX the Canyon AT4X has a factory lifted, ultra-wide track to elevate the off-road performance and capability. Canyon AT4X comes with 33-inch MT tires, Multimatic DSSV shocks, front and rear e-lockers, under-body skid plates and the AT4X-exclusive Baja drive mode. The Canyon AT4X’s factory lift enables 10.7 inches of ground clearance and a 36.9-degree approach angle.

GMC first introduced AT4 in its Sierra light-duty pickup truck in 2019. But now gone is the 3.6-liter V6 engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Instead there’s a 2.7-liter Turbo four-cylinder, powering all models and trims. The high-torque, off-road optimized 2.7L turbo engine is said to provide best-in-class gas engine with 430 lb.-ft. of torque (GM Estimated).

There are also front and rear electronic locking differentials. With a 27.7-degree approach angle and a ground clearance of 10.0 inches and 33-inch BFGoodrich KM3 Mud-Terrain tires on 17-inch AEV Crestone wheels this is clearly an off-road vehicle.

Inside, the Canyon AT4X has an (marketing babble alert> Obsidian Rush interior with Ceramic White accents, customizable 11.3-inch diagonal touchscreen infotainment system and an 11-inch diagonal fully-digital instrument cluster. In addition, the AT4X includes a Head-Up Display and Bose® seven-speaker audio entertainment system.

The Canyon AT4X will also be the only trim with the so-called Edition 1* package. It includes:

  • Front- and rear-facing underbody cameras1 with washing function
  • Off-road front bumper with safari bar
  • Front 30-inch off-road grille light bar
  • Winch by COMEUP
  • 17-inch beadlock capable wheels
  • Reconfigurable bed rail system
  • Performance front skid plate
  • Unique Edition 1 tailgate badge
