Fisker Recalls 2012 Model Karma Cars because of Fires

Fisker Karma vehicles manufactured from 15 June 2011 through 9 July 2012 are covered by the safety recall.

Fisker Automotive is recalling 1,377 Finnish-built Karma passenger cars because a defect in a low temperature cooling fan may result in a short circuit. The short can then ignite the fan housing, shroud and surrounding components, causing a vehicle fire.

At least one Karma car fire has been reported and one cooling fan has burnt, according to Fisker in the required defect filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed today.

Fisker will notify owners, and dealers will remove the two potentially affected low temperature cooling fans and replace them with one redesigned cooling fan, free charge as required by U.S. regulations. The cooling fan circuit will also be modified to 20-amp circuit using an in-line fuse. The redesigned parts have been in production since May 2012.

The safety recall begins today. Owners may contact Fisker consumer affairs at 1-855-575-7577 about recall campaign number 520120016. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov.
