The unemployment rate in the U.S. transportation sector was 4.8% (not seasonally adjusted) in June 2024, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said today. Seasonally adjusted, employment in the transportation and warehousing sector rose to 6,593,700 in June 2024 — up 0.1% from the previous month and up 0.1% from June 2023. Employment in transportation and warehousing grew 16.2% in June 2024 from the pre-pandemic June 2019 level of 5,675,200.

Unemployment in the transportation sector was higher than overall unemployment. BLS said that the U.S. unemployment rate, not seasonally adjusted, in June 2024 was 4.3% or 0.5 percentage points below the transportation sector rate.   • Air transportation rose to 577,800 in June 2024 – up 0.4% from the previous month and up 5.1% from June 2023.
  • Truck transportation remained virtually unchanged in June 2024 at 1,548,600 from the previous month but down 1.9% from June 2023.
  • Transit and ground passenger transportation rose to 442,900 in June 2024 – up 0.6% from the previous month and up 3.2% from June 2023.
  • Rail transportation rose to 153,300 in June 2024 – up 0.2% from the previous month and up 0.5% from June 2023.
  • Water transportation rose to 76,100 in June 2024 – up 0.9% from the previous month and up 7.5% from June 2023.
  • Pipeline transportation rose to 54,000 in June 2024 –  up 0.7% from the previous month and up 4.2% from June 2023.
  • Warehousing and storage fell to 1,771,500 in June 2024 – down 0.1% from the previous month and down 2.3% from June 2023.
