Nissan Adds Power Windows to All Versa Sub-Compacts

Aging Nissan Versa faces fresh competition, hence the pricing and equipment tweaks.

Nissan North America says that all Versa sub-compacts now come standard with power windows and door locks. This change affects all Versa 1.6 Sedans, as well as Versa 1.8 S Sedan and 1.8 S Hatchback models (power windows and door locks are already standard on Versa SL models) made in December onward.

The 2011 Versa Sedan 1.6 Base model remains one of the lowest priced new vehicles available in the United States market with its starting M.S.R.P. unchanged at $9,990.    Prices do not include destination charges and delivery fees, and the base model lacks anti-lock brakes. The Versa Base has a 107-horsepower 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission.

It’s an attempt by Nissan to tweak sales for the aging model, now entering its fifth year of production, in the face of fresh competition from the newly released Ford Fiesta and Mazda2 models.

Automakers need to sell B-cars to meet CAFE regulations, even though they are small, even tiny by U.S. tastes.

All 2011 Versa models are equipped with an independent MacPherson strut front suspension and torsion beam rear suspension, with front and rear stabilizer bars. Other standard equipment includes Electric Power Steering and power-assisted front disc/rear drum brakes, essentially the same as all of the cars in the B–car segment.

The front-wheel -drive Versa has one of the highest standard horsepower/torque ratings (Versa 1.8 models) and one of the largest interiors in the entry-level segment.

Versa is manufactured at Nissan’s Aguascalientes, Mexico assembly plant that also builds Nissan Sentra models for the United States market.

As a result of these changes, the optional S Power Plus Package is replaced by the S Plus Package, which offers cruise control and remote keyless entry.
