Freight Shipments Down in June as U.S. Economy Languishes
Commercial freight fell 0.1% in June from May, following no change in the index from April to May, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) released today. The June 2012 index level (109.5) was 16.1% above the April 2009 low during the Great Recession, which might be poised for a sequel. Continue reading

Commercial Freight Shipments Rise Slightly in February
Shipments in February 2012 were at the second highest level since the early recession month of April 2008 despite the 3.0% decline from December 2011 (113.7 on the index), which was the highest level in the 22-year history of the series. Freight Shipments Decline in May for Second Straight Month
Worse, from an economic point of view, freight declined three out of the past four months, and reached the lowest level in since November of 2010. In May 2011 freight shipments were approximately the same as they were in October 2008 after the global markets collapsed. Continue reading
