US Mazda MX-5 Miata Production Begins in Japan

At the lower end of the lineup, MX-5 Sport starts at $24,915 with 16-inch alloy wheels, a six-speed manual transmission, cruise control, LED headlights and taillights.

North America Mazda MX-5 Miata production began this week in Japan, although no plant location was listed by Mazda for the Hiroshima produced two-seater. Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) released pricing for the entire 2016 MX-5 range, Mazda’s image leader, but then had to issue a correction   since the initial pricing provided was inexplicably wrong in the latest example of the decline of communications skills at automakers. The first 1,000 Miata’s are designated as Launch Edition models. Three trim levels available – Sport, Club and Grand Touring.

In the usual automaker and understandable attempt to boost revenues on a new model, the Launch Edition roadsters sold in the U.S. have different badging and an MSRP of $30,495.

Launch Edition is actually the so-called Grand Touring trim level with the addition of keyless entry that is optional on other trim levels. If, horrors, you want a six-speed automatic, the MSRP us $31,570. All of these sports cars will be painted “Soul Red” with a tan leather interior. The colors are exclusive to the Launch Edition for 2016.

At the lower end of the lineup, the 2016 MX-5 Sport has a starting MSRP of $24,915 with  16-inch alloy wheels and a six-speed manual transmission, cruise control, LED headlights and tail lights There are also Bluetooth phone pairing and audio streaming, a  leather shift knob, power door locks, single USB input and cruise control.

MX-5 Club starts at $28,600 with 17-inch alloy wheels with 205/45R17 tires, a front air dam, a trunk-mounted rear lip spoiler, black seat back bars and exterior mirror caps. There is a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with AM/FM/HD/SiriusXM satellite radio and a nine-speaker Bose audio system with headrest speakers. A limited-slip rear differential, Bilstein shocks and shock-tower brace are standard when equipped with the manual transmission.

Club for another $3,400 has forged BBS 17-inch wheels, Brembo front brake rotors and calipers with painted front and rear calipers, side sill extensions and a rear bumper skirt.

The Grand Touring model starts at $30,065 with 7-inch bright alloy wheels, leather-trimmed and heated seats, automatic climate control, the BOSE nine-speaker audio system with headrest speakers, and a seven-inch touchscreen monitor. There are also a Homelink garage door opener, rain-sensing wipers and adaptive headlights in addition to MX-5 Sport’s standard equipment.  Blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and lane-departure warning are part of the package.
