General Motors is conducting a regional recall of about 50,000 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia SUVs because the windshield wipers may stop working. The cause is a fastener on the wiper arm that is not tight enough. As a result, when snow or ice is present the wipers can eventually fail on 2011 and 2012 models.
GM is only recalling only the SUVs registered in Snow Belt states. Critics of such limited safety recalls maintain that they do not fix all the potentially affected vehicles. Dealers will tighten the wiper arm nuts. GM is sending the dealer bulletin this week and mailing owner letters on April 27, 2012.
GM told NHTSA that this safety recall involves vehicles registered in areas with heavy snow and ice conditions. Vehicles that are not registered in one of these areas but travel to one of these areas when heavy snow and ice conditions may occur are covered under Customer Advisory Bulletin 12072.
