Mercedes-Benz Barely Bests BMW in September US Sales

More crossover sales increases – GLC top Mercedes seller in September 2018.

Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today reported September sales of 26,169 Mercedes-Benz models, a decrease of 9.8% from September 2017. Mercedes-Benz Vans reported best-ever month of 4,448 units (up 44.0%) and smart reported 98 units, bringing MBUSA to a grand total of 30,715 vehicles for the month. On a year-to-date basis, sales of Mercedes-Benz vehicles totaled 225,384, with an additional 28,023 units for Vans and 959 vehicles for smart, bringing the sales volume to 254,366, a decrease of 5.8% from last year.

Nipping at the heals was BMW with the 11th straight month of growth of BMW brand vehicles, which increased 1.3% in September 2018 for a total of 25,908, compared to 25,571 vehicles sold in September 2017. Year-to-date, the BMW brand is up% on sales of 225,065 vehicles compared to 220,175 sold in the first three quarters of 2017.

Mercedes-Benz volume leaders in September included the GLC, C-Class and E-Class model lines. The GLC took the lead at 6,070, followed by C-Class sales of 4,682. The E-Class rounded out the top three with 4,072 units sold.  September sales of Mercedes-AMG high-performance totaled 1,378 units, with 20,738 vehicles sold year-to-date.

Separately, Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned (MBCPO) models recorded sales of 10,274 vehicles in September, an increase of 17.8% when compared to the same month last year (8,725). On a year-to-date basis, MBCPO sold 95,569 vehicles, an increase of 9.0% over 2017 (87,677).

BMW’s lineup of Sports Activity Vehicles accounted for 52% of BMW brand sales in September 2018. For the sixth consecutive month, the BMW X3 was the top-selling BMW model in the U.S.

BMW brand sales of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles totaled 1,858 in September 2018, an increase of 4.3 percent from the 1,781 sold in the same month a year ago. In total, BMW Group (BMW and MINI) electrified vehicles accounted for 6.7 percent of U.S. sales in September 2018. BMW Group currently offers seven electrified models in the U.S., including the BMW i3, BMW i8, BMW 330e, BMW 530e, BMW 740e, BMW X5 xDrive 40e and MINI Countryman plug-in-hybrid electric vehicle.

Sales of BMW Group vehicles (BMW and MINI brands combined) in the U.S. increased 0.2 % in September 2018 for a total of 29,369 vehicles, compared with 29,307 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date BMW Group sales in the U.S. are up 1.7% from the first nine months of 2017.

Separately, BMW Certified Pre-Owned sold 9,857 vehicles, a decrease of 7% from September 2017. Total BMW Pre-Owned sold 20,220 vehicles, an increase of 2.7% from September 2017.

MINI Certified Pre-Owned sold 1,193 vehicles in September, an increase of 40.9% from September 2017. Total MINI Pre-Owned sold 2,773 vehicles in September, an increase of 13.7% from September 2017.
