It’s a big weekend for sports car racing in the US as IMSA goes to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California.

Jordan Taylor and Corvette Racing will start sixth on the GTD PRO grid Sunday for the Hyundai Monterey Sports Car Championship as the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R goes for its second victory of the season in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Next stop for Corvette? LeMans!

Taylor qualified the No. 3 C8.R on Saturday with a time of 1:24.160 (95.731 mph) to put him 1.018 seconds off Mathieu Jaminet’s pole time. Taylor and Garcia have placed second the last two years at Laguna Seca, but the lack of performance will make the task of winning for the ninth time in Monterey – and maintaining the lead in the GTD PRO points standings – even tougher.

The circuit is one of two that the team has raced at in each of its 24 seasons to date. Sebring is the other, and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta will join the list at the end of the season with the 10-hour Petit Le Mans.

Over at Cadillac, Alex Lynn has been a quick study of the technical 2.238-mile, 11-turn natural-terrain WeatherTech Laguna Seca road course. The co-driver of the No. 02 Cadillac Accessories Cadillac DPi-V.R, making his debut at the racecourse, led the Cadillac contingent by qualifying third for the Hyundai Sports Car Championship on May 1. Lynn’s lap of 1 minute, 14.072 seconds was a mere 0.148 off the pace of the pole-winning DPi driven by Ricky Taylor, who set the DPi track record time.

The No. 02 Cadillac enters the race as the championship points leader, having won at Sebring and finishing runner-up to the No. 01 Cadillac at Long Beach. “It was a positive session to get P3 on a track that doesn’t tend to suit us. I think that’s actually a really good showing so close to pole. It’s a good start and we will see what tomorrow brings,” Lynn said.

Teammate Sebastien Bourdais, who had claimed the pole for the past two races, turned in a best lap of 1:14.517 in the No. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi and will share Row 2 with Lynn for the 2-hour, 40-minute race.

The No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi-V.R, driven by Tristan Vautier, will start on Row 3 alongside the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi. Tristan Nunez, who earned his first victory at the track in Skip Barber competition, drove the Action Express Racing entry in the 15-minute qualifying session.

Cadillac DPi entries finished second and third at Laguna Seca in the 2021 race, held on Sept. 12.

At BMW, John Edwards will start the No. 25 BMW M Team RLL BMW M4 GT3 fourth in the GTD PRO class in the  two-hour-and-forty-minute Monterey Sports Car Championship. He posted a 1:23.740-minute lap around the 2.238-mile, 11-turn Laguna Seca circuit, 0.598 seconds in arrears of the pole sitting Porsche 911 GT3R. Edwards will co-drive with Connor De Phillippi, the duo looking for their first podium finish of the season.

In the GTD class, Robby Foley posted the third fastest time with a 1:23.821-minute lap. He will co-drive the No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 with Bill Auberlen. The Long Beach-winning Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 of Madison Snow and Bryan Sellers will start sixth.

BMW Team RLL has three GT class victories at the California circuit. John Edwards co-drove to the win in both 2015 (with Lucas Luhr) and 2017 (with Martin Tomczyk). De Phillippi followed with the victory in 2018 (with Alexander Sims). With three events complete so far this season, De Phillippi and Edwards stand sixth in GTD Pro points standings.
