General Motors and SAIC Motor today announced a 20-year extension of their joint venture partnership to 2047. This is GM’s latest commitment to selling vehicles in world’s largest auto market. GM led the way starting in 1997 among global automakers to profit from China, whose sage industrial policy required that advanced western automakers link with local partners via JVs so that Chinese jobs were created and profits shared with Chinese communities. This also transferred advanced western mass production technologies, engineering processes and prowess, to China so that it emerged as the preeminent Global Force in automobility. GM posted second-quarter 2026 sales of more than 357,000 units in China.*
“Today’s agreement reflects our shared confidence in SAIC-GM and its long-term growth potential,” said John Roth, GM Senior Vice President and President of GM China. “We are committed to strong performance in the China market, and we see meaningful opportunities to compete in select international markets: the Middle East, Africa, South America, Mexico and Asia-Pacific.”
The renewed contract means that the JV will continue to accelerate technological transformation, explore new growth opportunities – including jobs – and deliver sustainable profitability.
Having manufactured and delivered more than 20 million vehicles and established end-to-end vehicle development capabilities early on, SAIC-GM continues with a growing portfolio of products defined and developed locally. “This gives the company a distinctive competitive edge among joint ventures in responding quickly to China’s fast-evolving consumer needs,” SAIC-GM said.
As China’s auto market accelerates towards electrified intelligent vehicles, SAIC-GM will launch at least 30 new energy vehicles (NEVs) by 2030 and deploy more technology solutions developed in China for the Chinese market. It will sharpen its focus on the Buick and Cadillac brands in China.
Buick’s premium NEV sub-brand ELECTRA, launched in 2025, and its underlying Xiao Yao super architecture – the first of its kind led by a Chinese team – is a formidable mixture of local technology development and deployment with global standards.
Since then, the growing ELECTRA lineup has expanded across sedan, SUV and MPV segments, offering choices of battery electric vehicle (BEV), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), and extended range electric vehicles (EREV). Its top-selling model E7 delivered more than 10,000 units in its first month on the market, the fastest pace among NEVs from joint ventures in China.
The Buick ELECTRA E7 also in theory represents SAIC-GM’s growth opportunities beyond China. Drawing on China’s innovation and speed, SAIC-GM will look to select global markets, with the E7 set to become its first premium NEV model to go overseas in October. This of course is dependent on local trade and tariff policies. Given the current overheated political climate in the U.S., a bet on a snowball surviving Global Warming has better odds than its appearance here.
