Mazda Recalls Mazda 3 Models for Bad Windshield Wipers

The Mazda 3 wiper safety recall is expected to begin on or before 15 July 2011 in the U.S. Globally more than 400,000 vehicles are involved.

Mazda is recalling more than 100,000 Mazda 3 and Mazdaspeed 3 cars from the 2008-2009  model years because the windshield wipers can stop working. The ground terminal of the Korean-built Bosch windshield wiper motor may have been bent during assembly. Over time the electrical resistance of the motor circuit may increase so that eventually the windshield wipers would not work.

The loss of wipers in adverse weather could potentially increase the risk of a crash, Mazda said in the required filing to the National Highway traffic safety Administration (NHTSA). The problem was first discovered in September of 2009.

Dealers will install an additional ground harness on the wiper motor free of charge as is required by law. The Mazda safety recall is expected to begin on or before 15 July 2011.

Owners may contact the Mazda customer assistance center at 1-800-222-5500 about recall number 6411f. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to http://www.safercar.gov. NHTSA campaign ID number: 11V329.
