American Honda said today it would recall 554,000 model-year 2002-2004 CR-V and 2003 Pilot vehicles in the United States to inspect and replace parts of the headlight wiring system. In a statement, Honda said the wiring of the headlight switch does not have enough slack in it, which may cause the low beam headlights to fail. No crashes or injuries have been reported related to this latest Honda safety defect.
This headlight recall mirrors another earlier Honda headlight recall on 143,083 model year 2007 and 2008 Fit vehicles because of a bad headlight switch, which caused the low-beams to fail and possibly start a fire.
That problem derives from the routing of the wiring harness to the headlight switch, causing, according to Honda, wear on the plating of the wiring harness connectors. This results in corrosion and causes the connector to overheat and fail. The high-beam headlight circuit is not affected. (See American Honda Recalls Fit for Headlight Failures) It was not immediately clear if this is a related or different problem on CR-V and Pilot headlights.
Owners of CR-V and Pilot models with potentially defect headlights will receive a mailing, starting in late-April 2012. In addition to contacting customers by mail, in late-April, owners of these vehicles will be able to determine if their vehicles require repair by going on-line to www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (800) 999-1009, and selecting option 4.
Honda is experiencing something similar to Toyota’s well-publicized quality meltdown. During the past year or so, Honda has issued more than 27 public statements about various safety defects and recalls in the U.S.
