NHTSA Probe Forces Ford Focus EV Recall for Stalling

Ford Motor Company is recalling model year 2012-2014 Focus Electric vehicles because they unexpectedly shut down. The safety recall comes after the NHTSA opened an investigation last September into the problem because of numerous consumer complaints. (NHTSA Investigating Sudden Stalling on Ford Focus EVs)

Once again, sloppy computer programming is responsible. The powertrain control module simply shuts off the Focus EV, just like a Microsoft operating system locking up your computer, but with potentially far dire consequences.

NHTSA told Ford Motor that the complaints allege a sudden vehicle shutdown while driving, about half – or 14 – of them say the shut off occurred at speeds of 30 mph or higher. 

When opening the investigation, ODI noted that the complaints show an apparent increasing trend, with all 30 complaints received within the past five months. NHTSA has requested detailed information from the Number Two U.S. automaker.

Ford will notify Focus EV owners, and dealers will reprogram the power control module, free of charge as is required by U.S. safety regulations. The recall is expected to begin by late November 2013. Ford’s recall campaign number is 13S09.
