Production has started in Alabama of the Mercedes EQE SUV – a taller and bigger version of the EQS sedan. Pricing ranges from $106,000 to more than $133,000. Mercedes with this full-size SUV is mounting a badly needed defense of its competitiveness in expensive luxury vehicles, which is under attack by Tesla, Lexus, BMW, Porsche, and Maybach, among others. By 2030, the subsidiary of Daimler now – belatedly? – wants more than half the cars it sells to have electric drive systems – this includes all-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, areas it has been slow to embrace.

The new EQE SUV shares its long wheelbase (3,210 millimeters) with the EQS Saloon, but is more than 20 centimeters higher. The dimensions: 5,125/1,959/1,718 millimeters (length/width [2] / height [3]). The interior profits, so to speak, from these generous SUV dimensions and from the advantages of a design tailored to the electric platform. The second row of seats can be electrically adjusted as standard. Up to four golf bags fit in the back. A third row of seats with two additional individual seats and extensive comfort features for all passengers is available as an option.

At market launch, the model range has  three alternatives: EQE 450 + (WLTP: combined electric energy consumption: 22.9-18.2 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)[1] and EQE 450 4MATIC (WLTP: combined electric energy consumption: 24.3-20.2 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) [1] each with 265 kW output, and the EQE 580 4MATIC (WLTP: combined electric energy consumption: 24.3‑20.2 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) [1] with 400 kW.

All EQE SUVs have an electric drive train (eATS) on the rear axle. Versions with 4MATIC also have an eATS on the front axle. In the 4MATIC models, the  so-called Torque Shift “intelligently and continuously distributes the drive torque between the front and the rear electric motors.” This also involves the use of the most efficient eATS in the particular instance, claims Mercedes. The electric motors on the front and rear axles are permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM). The advantages of this design include high power density, high efficiency and high-power consistency.

The EQS Saloon was the first model series from Mercedes-Benz in which additional vehicle functions can be activated in several areas via over-the-air updates (OTA).With the EQE SUV, this offer is significantly expanded. For example, Trailer Maneuvering Assist or MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) Augmented Reality Navigation can be activated at a later date.
