Tesla is recalling some 2021-2022 Model S liftback vehicles because the right or left side curtain air bag inflators may have been assembled incorrectly. During manufacturing by supplier Joyson Safety System of Auburn Hills Michigan the inflator may have been installed into the side curtain airbag assembly with an additional spacer plate component. This results in an airbag that did not meet specifications. The replacement airbag was assembled with an inflator with a correct number of components that meet specifications.
Tesla will replace the affected side curtain airbag on all affected vehicles as required by U.S. regulations. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 22, 2022. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-22-20-001. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
