Last Friday on 15 December 2023, the Toyota Mobility Foundation general meeting gathered together participating members to review the progress of various activities and share insights between subcommittees. A report was issue today from the subcommittees at the Tateshina Meeting*1, which promotes discussions and the expansion of collaboration among participants with the goal of zero casualties in traffic accidents.

The five subcommittees have started their activities with an initial focus on issues such as support for vulnerable road users, meaning children and older adults, accidents involving bicycles and motorcycles, and accidents occurring overseas. Since their establishment, the subcommittees have set a goal to accelerate, to the extent possible, the realization of achieving zero traffic accident casualties. To date, approximately 140 people from 35 companies have participated. Activities are being promoted in cooperation with the government, local authorities, and relevant organizations based on a three-pronged approach involving cars, people, and traffic infrastructure.

  1. The Tateshina Meeting was first held in 2019 to share aspirations and promote collaboration to achieve zero traffic accident casualties. It is held during the Summer Festival at the Mount Tateshina Shoko-ji Temple, where executives from the automobile and related industries gather annually to pray for traffic safety. At the meeting held in July 2023, subcommittees were also launched to further enhance the effectiveness of initiatives on traffic safety and achieving zero accident casualties.
  2. Pilot Initiatives for Reducing Traffic Accidents among Rental Car Users in Okinawa Prefecture: Since December 2021, TMF, in collaboration with partner companies involved in car rentals, has been conducting verification tests to support safe driving among rental users. In February 2023, TMF concluded a collaboration agreement with the Okinawa Prefectural Police Headquarters; and is currently promoting initiatives in collaboration with industry, academia, and government.
  3. “Traffic Safety Plaza” (27 October 27 – 24December 2023) The Tateshina Meeting Subcommittee for New Awareness-raising Activities for Children is holding a “Traffic Safety Plaza” for children on the occasion of the “FORUM8 Rally Japan 2023” in Toyota City.

Ken Zino, editor and publisher of AutoInformed, is a versatile auto industry participant with global experience spanning decades in print and broadcast journalism, as well as social media. He has automobile testing, marketing, public relations and communications experience. He is past president of The International Motor Press Assn, the Detroit Press Club, founding member and first President of the Automotive Press Assn. He also brings an historical perspective while citing their contemporary relevance of the work of legendary auto writers such as Ken Purdy, Jim Dunne or Jerry Flint, or writers such as Red Smith, Mark Twain, Thomas Jefferson – all to bring perspective to a chaotic automotive universe. Above all, decades after he first drove a car, Zino still revels in the sound of the exhaust as the throttle is blipped during a downshift and the driver’s rush that occurs when the entry, apex and exit points of a turn are smoothly and swiftly crossed. It’s the beginning of a perfect lap. AutoInformed has an editorial philosophy that loves transportation machines of all kinds while promoting critical thinking about the future use of cars and trucks. Zino builds AutoInformed from his background in automotive journalism starting at Hearst Publishing in New York City on Motor and MotorTech Magazines and car testing where he reviewed hundreds of vehicles in his decade-long stint as the Detroit Bureau Chief of Road & Track magazine. Zino has also worked in Europe, and Asia – now the largest automotive market in the world with China at its center.
