Static Electricity from Wipers Prompts Jeep Recall

AutoInformed.com

Electronics continue to have unintended safety implications at all automakers.

Chrysler – FCA US – is recalling 2014 Jeep Cherokee models because using the front windshield wipers on dry glass may cause damage to the body control module because of static electricity.

The electro-static discharge in the wiper system could feed back into the Body Control Module internal electronics and cause the BCM to fail.

A bad BCM could cause the windshield wipers to stop functioning without warning.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install a ground strap to protect the BCM from damage. FCA has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler’s number for this recall is R39.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov
