Volvo dealers will replace oil pipes on the steering rack for free, as required by U.S. regulations.

Volvo is recalling 2010-11 model XC90 vehicles manufactured from 29 January 2010 through 16 August 2010. Power steering fluid may leak from the oil pipe connection at the steering gear valve housing.

This Volvo safety defect from a ZF produced component could cause a sudden loss of power steering, increasing the risk of an accident, but drivers should notice either oil leaks or increased power steering pump noise before that.

Volvo dealers will replace the oil pipes on the power steering rack free of charge, as is required by U.S. safety regulations.  The Volvo recall is scheduled to begin on or before 31 May 2011. Owners may contact Volvo at 1-800-458-1552 about recall number R242.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov.
