Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling 2023-2024 Accord and HR-V vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The front seat belt pretensioners may be missing the rivet that secures the quick connector and wire plate.
These Accord cars and HR-V SUVs fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 208, “Occupant Crash Protection,” 209, “Seat Belt Assembles,” and 210, “Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages.” More than 300,000 vehicles are involved because of a defective part made by Joyson Safety Systems in Mexico.
Chronology
- May 23, 2023 – Honda received the first market complaint for the defect.
- September 20, 2023 – Honda received the affected parts and began to investigate the issue September 27, 2023 – Honda investigated the potentially affected population of vehicles.
- November 16, 2023 – Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety and a FMVSS non-compliance existed and decided to conduct a safety and noncompliance recall.
- November 16, 2023 – Honda has had 7 warranty claims, and no reports of injuries or deaths related to this safety defect from April 26, 2022, through November 16, 2023.
Dealers will inspect and replace the seat belt pretensioner assemblies as necessary, free of charge as required by US regulations. However, owner notification letters are not expected to be mailed until 8 January 2024. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda’s numbers for this recall are MG7 and NG5.
