Computerized controls on the crankshaft lathe were apparently improperly set.
The failure of an engine in a Ferrari California that was in the press fleet this past March has led to the recall of 2011 Italia and 2012 California models. The crankshaft in the high revving V8 engines – maximum power at 9,000 rpm – was improperly machined and as a result, the engine can seize suddenly.
Customers will have the choice of letting the dealer install a new crankshaft and bearings; sending their engines back to Ferrari North America, or have it supply a replacement engine. Owners can contact Ferrari at 201-816-2600.
