Indy 500 Veteran Shigeaki Hattori Dead at 61
Shigeaki Hattori, one of eight Japanese-born drivers to compete in the Indianapolis 500, died April 5 in a car accident in Huntersville, North Carolina. He was 61.
“The native of Okayama in southern Japan, Hattori competed at Indianapolis Motor Speedway three times, earning a pair of starts. After serving as the first alternate to the 33-car field in 2001, he finished 20th in 2002 for Bradley Motorsports, completing 197 laps. The next year, he finished 30th driving for AJ Foyt Racing as the car’s fuel system failed. Those two races in the “500” were among Hattori’s 34 career INDYCAR SERIES starts in a four-year span that ended in 2003. His best series finish came at Texas Motor Speedway when he finished sixth in 2002,” the Indianapolis Motor Speedway said this morning. Continue reading

Josef Newgarden in Penske Chevrolet Wins Texas 600
The second caution occurred when James Hinchcliffe slid wide into the Turn 2 wall on Lap 219. The final exasperating yellow came when the cars of Scott Dixon and rookie Colton Herta touched while battling for third place in Turn 3 on Lap 229, sending both into the wall. It was clearly Dixon’s fault. Race Control did nothing. Continue reading
IndyCar – Freedom 250 Grand Prix at Washington National Mall
“President Trump has bestowed an incredible distinction upon our sport, and we’re grateful for his trust and support as INDYCAR prepares to honor our country with a tremendous racing spectacle,” said Roger Penske, owner of the IndyCar series. “This will be a truly memorable event that celebrates our country’s independence and the legacy of patriotism, innovation and excellence that powers motorsports across America.”
The move while deeply surprising to AutoInformed is – on reflection given Fox Sports broadcasting control of the series and its parent company’s uncritical support of the Trump Administration – business as usual. Trump is turning to sports to help. To borrow a thought from a dictionary writer, it is not surprising that so many in all ages and countries made Patriotism a cloak for self-interest. We await to hear what Corporation or entity will be the title sponsor of the race. Penske’s self-interest is obvious as well. Continue reading →
