Offshore Brands Move Ahead in July. Toyota outsells Ford
GM by slightly outperforming an overall market that was up 14% easily held onto its Number One spot in the U.S. at 234,071 vehicles sold. However, Ford Motor slipped to Number Three as Toyota had a stronger month with sales soaring to 193,394 to Ford’s 190,080. March of 2010 was the last time Toyota topped Ford and with new Corolla compact car and Tundra pickup trucks just entering production, the back half of the year will see a battle royal between the two global automakers. Chrysler Group Sales Up 13% in July, Best in Five Years
Chrysler Group today reported U.S. sales of 126,089 units, a 13% increase compared with sales in July 2011 (112,026 units), and the group’s best July sales since 2007. All of the brands contributed to the positive results, the 28th-consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains in the slowly recovering U.S. auto business. Until final results from all makers are available late today, it is unclear whether Chrysler is still outperforming the market. Continue reading

Korean Auto Sales Surge as Japanese Remain Sidelined
Korean auto sales increased sharply in July while Japanese automakers watched as depleted inventories once again cut into their normal sales levels. Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia posted huge gains and a record month. A combination of high fuel economy and low prices – helped by the Korean Won – saw double-digit sales gains at both automakers. Still, several questions remain about the ability of Korean automakers to continue to grow at the significant rates they have been achieving. Continue reading
