Highway Deaths at Lowest Level in 60 years

Annual ‘Click it or Ticket’ Safety Belt Enforcement Underway
This year’s police enforcement action coincides with new advertisements by DOT’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that spoofs unsafe attempts by drivers to fake seat belt use. NHTSA data show nationwide more than three million seat belt citations have been issued during the annual crackdowns over the past five years. Continue reading

Truck Underride Guards Fail in Crashes so IIHS Wants New Rule
In 2009, 70% of the 3,163 people who died in all large truck crashes were occupants of cars or other passenger vehicles. Underride crashes makes death or serious injury more likely since the upper part of the passenger vehicle’s occupant compartment typically crushes as the truck body intrudes into the vehicle safety cage. General Motors Joins Toyota in Helping Child Injury Group
General Motors has joined the advisory board of the Center for Child Injury Prevention Studies (CChIPS) at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute. GM researchers will help CChIPS faculty in a study aimed at improving safety belt performance and decreasing the child injury rate during vehicle crashes. Continue reading
