Acura said today that the world debut of the all-electric 2024 ZDX will be on 17 August during the Monterey Car Week. Acura will also launch with a ZDX Type S performance variant. The ZDX will be the first production model to use styling themes of the new Acura design direction introduced last year during Monterey Car Week in the form of the Acura Precision EV Concept. “Acura’s unyielding commitment to delivering on the Precision Crafted Performance brand promise will continue in the electrified future, exemplified by Type S models that put the driver experience first,” said Emile Korkor, assistant vice president of Acura National Sales. “As the most powerful and quickest accelerating SUV in the brand’s history, the ZDX Type S will deliver on this promise and bring an exhilarating driving experience to the electric vehicle market.”
The largish – grotesque to some AutoInformed readers – ZDX is being co-developed with GM using the highly flexible global EV platform powered by Ultium batteries. What fun for brand managers – a common platform for Cadillac and Acura SUVs? Acura eventually will launch additional EV models starting in 2026 based on the company’s own global EV Architecture.
Styled at the Acura Design Studio in Southern California, the sculpted SUV reflects the exterior themes previewed with the Acura Precision EV Concept, including an illuminated evolution of Acura’s Diamond Pentagon grille.
Both the 2024 ZDX and ZDX Type S performance variant go on-sale early next year and will have integrated intuitive technologies as standard equipment, including Acura’s first use of Google built-in with the latest apps and services. The ZDX also marks the launch of the collaboration with Bang & Olufsen luxury audio, which will expand across the entire Acura lineup in the coming years.
The Acura line has four models –Integra sport compact, TLX sport sedan, the RDX and MDX sport-utility vehicles, along with high-performance Type S variants. Acura’s first all-electric model will be an SUV, the ZDX and ZDX Type S, and will arrive in 2024. All Acura vehicles sold in America are made in the US, using domestic and globally sourced parts. GM and Honda have developed a working relationship over many years, including several nascent projects focused on electric and autonomous vehicle technologies:
- In 2013, the two companies began working together on the co-development of a next-generation fuel cell system and hydrogen storage technologies.
- In 2018, Honda joined GM’s EV battery module development efforts.
- In 2020, GM and Honda announced plans to co-develop two EVs, including the Honda Prologue, to be launched in early 2024, soon followed by Acura’s first EV SUV.
- The companies also have an ongoing relationship with Cruise and are working together on the development of the Cruise Origin, one of the first purpose-built fully autonomous vehicles designed for driverless ride-hail and delivery.
