The UAW said today that it has reached a tentative agreement with General Dynamics – Electric Boat ahead of the UAW Marine Drafters strike deadline of midnight Sunday 18 May. “This agreement comes after an unprecedented mobilization from the union’s membership: 2200 members, or more than 90% of the bargaining unit, signed up to report for picket duty if a strike became necessary,” the UAW said. The five-year agreement, covering more than 2400 workers in Groton who design nuclear submarines, obtains a 30% wage increase over the life of the agreement and an improved wage progression. “This contract is going to change the lives of our members,” said Bill Louis, the President of Local 571. “After years of sky-high housing costs and record inflation, our members are finally seeing the recognition they deserve for their hard work.”
The deal at Electric Boat comes as other UAW members in the defense sector stand up to billionaire class greed. Over 900 UAW members are currently on strike at Lockheed Martin, in Florida and Colorado.
“In the UAW, members are the highest authority” said UAW Region 9A Director Brandon Mancilla. “While MDA-UAW members will vote on this contract in the coming days, I want to congratulate them for taking on this fight. When 2,200 workers sign up for picket duty, you know we’re not messing around.”
