NHTSA Fines BMW $40M for Late Recalls, False Info
Under the Consent Order, BMW acknowledges that it failed to recall the non-compliant vehicles in a timely fashion. It also acknowledges additional violations discovered in NHTSA’s investigation, including failing in multiple recalls since its 2012 consent order to notify owners and dealers of recalls in a timely fashion and to provide required quarterly recall completion reports on time. US DOT Fines Fiat Chrysler $70 Million more
FCA is the fifth vehicle manufacturer in the past 14 months that NHTSA has penalized for failure to meet early warning reporting requirements. NHTSA Whacks Takata with $70-200 Million Consent Order
The U.S. DOT today issued the largest civil penalty in NHTSA’s history to Takata for violating the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. In an unprecedented move, NHTSA’s authority is being used to accelerate recall repairs to millions of affected vehicles. Huge GM Recall on Engine Fires affects 1.1 million Vehicles
The repair needed to stop what are now 1,345 fires in vehicles involved in earlier recalls for the defect is unknown. GM said it would provide this information as soon as it is available. Until an improved fix has been applied, owners should park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended since 85% of the fires occurred after the car was parked.
