Sundiro Honda Motorcycle Company, one of Honda’s motorcycle production and sales joint ventures in China, today marked the company’s 10th anniversary since its establishment in 2001. The joint venture is remarkable for not only for its rapid growth, which made it number one in the Chinese market, but also for its thriving export business, including success in the chauvinistic Japanese market.
Sundiro provides one model for the next wave of Chinese exports by using an established brand name to provide assurance to customers that highly complex motorcycles and ultimately automobiles can be bought with confidence even though they are made in China. Sundiro Honda now exports hundreds of thousands of motorcycles to more than 45 countries, and is one of the largest operations of Honda’s thriving motorcycle business.
Established on September 19, 2001, Sundiro Honda exceeded the 7 million-unit mark in motorcycle production in just 10 years. Along with the production of motorcycles for the Chinese market, Sundiro Honda began exports of its products in 2002, just its second year in operation.
Among its first export models was the Today scooter, which has been especially popular in the Japanese market as an affordable product since exports began in 2002. Cumulative production of 50cc scooters for export reached 1 million units in June 2010.
“Sundiro Honda is positioned as a core operation of Honda’s global motorcycle business and will be further expanded and advanced to continue fulfilling this role. Let’s join the forces of all Honda associates here and challenge on a daily basis,” said Takanobu Ito, president and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. to all Honda associates who attended the ceremony.
In 2010, Sundiro Honda’s sales in China totaled approximately 570,000 units, up 3% since 2009, with more than 4,900 workers at two plants- Tianjin and Shanghai. Honda’s motorcycle business in China began in 1982 with the start of motorcycle production under a required alliance with China Jialing Industrial Co., Ltd. Now, three joint ventures — Sundiro Honda, Wuyang-Honda, and Jialing-Honda Motors Co., Ltd. — are behind Honda´s motorcycle production and sales in China.
