Hyundai Interseat Airbag Reduces Head Injuries 80%

Hyundai says that it has completed the development of an interseat airbag, aka center airbag, which reduces head injuries to passengers by more than 80% during a lateral collision. An interseat airbag protects passengers on the opposite side of the contact point. In case of a lateral collision, the passenger can be protected by the curtain airbag or the side airbag, but the person next to him or her may sustain a critical injury their head against the other passenger’s shoulder or head. As these kinds of cases have been reported, the European automotive safety evaluation program, aka Euro NCAP, said in 2014 that it strongly recommends interseat airbags. Continue reading →

Less Expensive Chevrolet Cruze Airbag Earns 5 Stars from NHTSA

The 2013 Chevrolet Cruze using a groundbreaking single inflator airbag has been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at a maximum 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score. Ford Inflatable Rear Seat Belt to Debut on New Mondeo

Ford Motor Company announced today that an inflatable rear seat belt would make its European debut next year on the all-new Mondeo. The inflatable belt is designed to reduce head, neck and chest injuries for rear-seat passengers. General Motors to Debut World’s First Center Airbag in 2013

A GM analysis of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System database (FARS) found that far-side impact crashes accounted for 11% of the belted front occupant fatalities in non-rollover impacts between 2004 and 2009. Also implied in the data GM looked at is that much more work remains to be done on interior design, including seat belts that don’t hold an occupant laterally, the now ubiquitous center consoles that are causing serious and fatal injuries, and the seat itself, which allows deadly movement.
