China Light Vehicle Sales Remain Strong in August
LMC notes that widespread industry predictions of only single digit growth rates for auto sales this year and for the next couple are increasingly looking erroneous and is sticking to a more than 13% increase during 2013 as a forecast. Continue reading
September U.S. Auto Sales Slowing in Latest Forecast
While a total September sales forecast of 1,132,800, if accurate, represents a mere 2% increase from September 2012, a calendar issue with Labor Day has negatively biased the month. The auto industry reports sales on a sales month basis rather than a calendar month basis. Historically, Labor Day falls in the September sales month. Not in 2013 though, it fell in the August sales month. Continue reading

August European Auto Sales Down Again
Auto sales in Western Europe fell by 5.3% in August dashing the hopes of auto executives that the market had finally bottomed out while continuing a five year negative trend as the results continue to confirm the bleak conditions facing the industry. Continue reading

Alternative Powertrains to Remain Technical Curiosities
The market share of battery electric vehicles’ (BEVs) of U.S. light vehicle sales is expected to remain below 1% through 2020. If plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), such as the Chevrolet Volt and the Ford Fusion Energi are included, share will only increase to 3% by 2020. Continue reading
July U.S. Sales Projected as Hot – up 12%
Not all this is good news for automakers in general, and specifically the Detroit Three. Drastic capacity cuts during the Great Recession have caught them out with the market recovery volumes approaching 16 million now running at least a year ahead of earlier forecasts. Mandatory overtime and cancelled vacations are the rule of the day, which ultimately will wear down UAW and workers at Japanese companies and inevitably lead to quality declines. Continue reading

Light Vehicle Sales Slow in February to 79.7M SAAR
Global light vehicles sales slowed in February for a seasonally adjusted annualized rate or SAAR of 79.7 million units. Some of the decrease was due to the timing of the Chinese New Year during the month instead of January. The consultancy LMC Automotive claimed that the first two months taken together are running as 82.7 million units per year, and is likely a more stable measure of recent demand levels. December Car Sales in Western Europe Drop 16%. Off -8% in 2012
The last month of 2012 saw car sales in Western Europe decline by 16% to a SAAR – or Seasonally Adjusted Annualized Rate – of just 11.7 million vehicles as the Eurozone crisis deepens. The market dropped more than -8% for the year taking it back to levels not seen since 1993. Sales in 2012 are more than 3 million units lower or -21%, compared to the size of the 2007 market. U.S. Auto Sales to Increase in 2013 to 15.3 Million as Recovery Slows
Prognostications are now well underway among consulting firms to predict 2013 U.S. auto sales. On the eve of the final results for 2012 U.S. auto sales, one firm has new light vehicle registrations in the U.S. in 2013 increasing 6.6% from 2012 levels to 15.3 million vehicles. Continue reading

Global Light Vehicle Sales Flat in October at 80.6 Million SAAR
Global sales of light vehicles were flat in October as declines in the EU offset modest gains elsewhere. Nonetheless, on a seasonally adjusted annual basis or SAAR, 2012 is tracking at a rate of 80.6 million units a year, with 68 million vehicles sold year-to-date. This means that the trend line of ever increasing global sales is now restored to a pre-2008 slope, before the global collapse of the financial and real estate markets created a Grand Canyon-sized dip from more than 70 million units in 2007 to a trough of ~55 million in 2008 and 2009.
