Toyota Motor 2012 Results Down 31% to $3.6 Billion Profit

Toyota Motor posted results for Fiscal Year 2012 ending 31 March that saw its net profit decline to ¥283.56 billion or $3.6 billion. A strong recovery in sales and earnings in the second half of the fiscal year was not enough to offset a poor first half, which was hurt by natural disasters in Japan and Thailand, which disrupted production. Toyota Loses ¥33 Billion in First Half FY 2012. Scraps Forecast

In North America – Toyota’s second largest market – vehicle sales totaled 689,000 thousand units, a decrease of 352,000 units compared to the same period last fiscal year. Operating income decreased by ¥84.4 billion to ¥61.5 billion, including ¥15.6 billion of valuation gains/losses on interest rate swaps. Operating income, excluding the impact of valuation gains/losses on interest rate swaps, decreased by ¥109.8 billion to ¥45.9 billion. Continue reading

Three Problem Areas for Toyota in U.S. from Japan Earthquake

During a press call to discuss March sales results today, Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. (TMS) said “The events in Japan had little if any impact on March sales.”

However, that doesn’t mean that Toyota no longer faces production and resulting sales problems because of the plant shutdowns caused by the Japan earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant meltdowns. Continue reading
