Tricky part: Does the reality live up to the concept and – more to the unique selling point – does it differ in any meaningful way from the long-standing class leaders?
Following its concours debut at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May, the Genesis Essentia Concept after a long publicity tour will finally be alongside the real thing – the new 2019 Genesis G70 – at this year’s Monterey Classic Car Week. Essentia will make stops at McCall’s Motorworks Revival and The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering before taking a spot on the concept lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The all-electric, high-performance Genesis Essentia Concept made its world debut at the 2018 New York International Auto Show to mixed reviews among the press I talked with there. Essentia is the brand’s first battery electric vehicle and has a lightweight carbon-fiber monocoque body, a multi-motor electric powertrain, and a “custom-tailored” interior.
Essentia is claimed to be the brand’s initial concept for a true GT car “as the ultimate manifestation of Genesis design and engineering,” (marketing babble alert) “As a capable, thrilling sports car designed to counter the complexities of a modern lifestyle, Essentia offers serenity, clarity and beauty.”
“Monterey Car Week is a prime opportunity for our team to reach one of the most influential global luxury markets,” said Manfred Fitzgerald, Executive Vice President and Global Head of the Genesis Brand.
The 2019 G70 is the third of six new Genesis models slated to debut by 2021, and the final sedan of the lineup. As the first Genesis model in the highly competitive lower priced luxury (oxymoron?) segment, “G70 will outperform legacy luxury sport sedans with driver-focused performance. G70 resets benchmarks and expectations among luxury sport sedans, with holistic integration of performance, body strength, refined luxury and aerodynamic design.”
Credentialed people will be able to see Essentia and the G70:
- Wednesday, August 22, 5 to 10 p.m.: McCall’s Motorworks Revival, Monterey Jet Center
- Friday, August 24, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, Quail Lodge and Golf Club (Essentia only)
- Sunday, August 26, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, The Lodge at Pebble Beach
