Digital Politics – Obama Ahead of Romney in Web, Social Media
The Obama campaign is using digital tools to talk directly with voters at almost four times the rate of the Romney campaign, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center. The tools, now also in widespread use at automakers, bypass the filters and biases of traditional media coverage. However, the latest electronic communications techniques are also largely a one-way street as campaigns (and automakers) talk at but rarely share or forward responses, long a complaint of traditional media critics. Milestones: Freedom of Information Act Web Site
Any citizen can make a FOIA request about any topic, although there are still considerable delays, prevarications and redactions by government agencies in making politically sensitive information available. Moreover, Congress still largely conducts its business behind closed doors with access only given all too often to the privileged wealthy few and monied special interests that dominate our ‘pay to play’ political process. Local and Network TV See Steep Declines as News Sources
The long term declines in the number of people getting news from such sources as local TV and network news shows have steepened this year. The number of people gathering campaign news online, which had nearly tripled between 2000 and 2008, has leveled off in 2012. In previous campaigns, declining figures for traditional TV and newspapers as sources were at least partly offset by increasing numbers turning to the internet. Continue reading
