Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) is recalling four, yes four, 2023 EQE 350 4MATIC and EQE 350+ vehicles. The mounting of the wheel rim inserts might not withstand the forces while driving.
As a result, “the rim inserts may detach from the wheels while driving,” according to the mandatory safety defect recall filing made public this morning by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Chronology
- In the beginning of August 2024, Mercedes-Benz AG launched initial investigations based on a report of an internal test in which rim inserts allegedly separated from the rim. Vehicle rim inserts were analyzed to determine the possible root cause. In parallel, plant campaigns were initiated to rework all vehicles accessible to MB-AG.
- In September 2024, further tests were performed with possibly affected rims. During these tests, different influences on the issue were analyzed in detail to determine a final root cause. Furthermore, possible consequences on the vehicles in the field were determined. Subsequently, the potentially affected vehicles which had reached the field were identified.
- On 15 November 2024, MB-AG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a voluntary recall.
- On 15 November 2024, MB-AG decided to conduct a recall outside of the US due to a potential safety risk. None of the affected vehicles had been offered for sale or lease in the US at this point in time.
- In the beginning of December 2024, during the implementation of the above-mentioned recall, indications were found that possibly affected parts might have been used as spare parts in the field contrary to previous information. MB-AG immediately launched further investigations to check the logistics processes to determine if these parts had been installed into vehicles. In January and February 2025, the potentially affected vehicles were identified through detailed research together with the market organizations.
- On 28 February 2025, MB-AG decided to extend the above-mentioned voluntary recall worldwide. MB-AG can confirm there are no warranty claims, field or service reports, and other information related to this defect worldwide.
