Sunderland, the UK’s largest car plant, will make all-electric future versions of the Qashqai, JUKE and LEAF models. Nissan said today that this will comprise three electric vehicles (EVs), three gigafactories and up to £3B in investment.
“Exciting, electric vehicles are at the heart of our plans to achieve carbon neutrality. With electric versions of our core European models on the way, we are accelerating towards a new era for Nissan, for industry and for our customers,” said Nissan President and CEO Makoto Uchida.

Both vehicle and battery manufacturing will be powered by the EV36Zero Microgrid, which will incorporate the wind and solar farms at Nissan and will have the capability to deliver 100% renewable electricity to Nissan and its neighboring suppliers. Nissan has ~7000 UK employees and says ~30,000 jobs are supported in the UK supply chain, which remains under threat because of the UK Brexit folly, which ignored the auto industry’s ~£71 billion (or more) contribution to the ailing British economy.
Today’s announcement follows Nissan’s confirmation that all its new cars in Europe from now will be fully electric. It expects its passenger car line-up in Europe to be 100% electric by 2030. It also builds on Nissan’s Ambition 2030 vision to become a sustainable company, “driving towards a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world.”
Further information about the three models, including names, specifications and launch dates, will be released at a later time. They will be “inspired” by Hyper Urban, Hyper Punk and Chill-Out concepts.

He is past president of The International Motor Press Assn, the Detroit Press Club, founding member and first President of the Automotive Press Assn. Above all, decades after he first drove a car, Zino still revels in the sound of the exhaust as the throttle is blipped during a downshift and the driver’s rush that occurs when the entry, apex and exit points of a turn are smoothly and swiftly crossed. It’s the beginning of a perfect lap.
AutoInformed has an editorial philosophy that loves transportation machines of all kinds while promoting critical thinking about the future use of cars and trucks.
Zino builds AutoInformed from his background in automotive journalism starting at Hearst Publishing in New York City on Motor and MotorTech Magazines and car testing where he reviewed hundreds of vehicles in his decade-long stint as the Detroit Bureau Chief of Road & Track magazine. Zino has also worked in Europe, and Asia – now the largest automotive market in the world with China at its center.
