Nissan Rogue Recall for Engine Failures and Fires

Nissan North America (7201T and NSANY ADR) is recalling ~324,00 model year 2023-2025 Rogue vehicles equipped with 3-cylinder 1.5-liter variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines.

“Increased temperatures can break down the engine oil, which may cause the engine bearings to seize and become damaged, leading to engine failure,” Nissan said in the required safety defect recall filing made public this morning by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) this morning.

“If the engine fails while driving, it can result in a loss of motive power (LOMP), and an inability to restart, increasing the risk of a crash. In certain rare cases, a bearing failure may cause a breach in the engine block, allowing hot oil to be discharged, increasing the risk of an engine fire, “Nissan said.

“Bearing failures are not typically instantaneous and tend to progress over time, allowing drivers to receive multiple forms of audible and visible advance warnings, including abnormal noise from the engine compartment, rough running, malfunction indicator lights (MIL), and warning messages in the instrument cluster,” Nissan said.

Nissan dealers will reprogram the engine control module (ECM) software, inspect for diagnostic trouble codes, and test drive the vehicle, free of charge. The dealer may also inspect the oil pan for metal debris, and replace the engine if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge as required by Federal Safety Regulations. Owner letters are not expected to expected to be mailed until 27 March 2026.

Owners may contact Nissan’s customer service at 800-647-7261. Nissan’s numbers for this recall are R25E2 and R25E3. This recall expands previous NHTSA recall number 25V437. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning 27 February 2026.

Chronology

[Chronology related to Recall 25V-437 is incorporated for reference.- AutoCrat]

  • August 2025 through December 2025 – Following production countermeasure adoption in late October 2025, Nissan identified additional incidents post-countermeasure of bearing seizure on certain Rogue vehicles equipped with the 3-cylinder 1.5-liter engine. Nissan also received three (3) Product Information Requests (PIRs) from NHTSA alleging incidents of bearing seizure, abnormal engine noise, difficulty starting, and/or engine stalling conditions on Model Year 2023-2024 Rogue vehicles.
  • 4 February 2026 – Through continued investigation including engine tear-down analysis, Nissan identified an additional contributing factor that may cause engine bearing seizures. High engine oil temperatures under certain operating conditions can degrade lubrication, potentially causing bearing seizure that may lead to engine damage and potentially engine failure. Nissan decided to conduct a voluntary recall campaign to remedy the potentially affected vehicles in the U.S. market. Nissan has confirmed a total of six-hundred ninety (690) warranty claims related to the subject condition. Nissan is not aware of any accident or injuries related to the subject conditions.
