Volvo Car USA is recalling a small number of 2025 EX30 SUVs because the Chinese-made high-voltage battery may experience a short circuit, overheat and cause a fire. Battery overheating message will display in Driver Information Module (DIM).

“The recall population is determined by the first and last vehicles that were produced with a high voltage battery from the Shandong Geely Sunwoda Power Battery Company in China. The start of production with these cell variants began on September 6th, 2024, and ended on October 25th, 2025. Vehicles produced after October 25, 2025, do not have the high voltage battery cell deviation. This recall affects certain model year 2025 EX30 vehicles,” Volvo said in the mandatory safety defect filing made public by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration this morning.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures and limit their charge to a maximum of 70% until the recall repair is complete. The remedy is currently under development. Once the repair is available, repairs will be performed free of charge as required by U.S. safety regulations. Owner notification letters are not expected to be mailed  until 23 February 2026. Owners may contact Volvo Car’s customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car’s number for this recall is R10355. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning 26 January 2026.

Fire Chronology

  • In July 2025 Volvo Cars received the first report indicating potential overheating of HV-battery cell outside the USA. An investigation was initiated to review the customer symptom and a possible root cause. The investigation was escalated to the Critical Concern Action Process (CCAP). The issue was concluded as potentially critical and the Critical Concern Management Team (CCMT) initiated a technical investigation to conclude customer symptom, risk assessment and root cause. Decision to start preparation and release and monitor was taken at the same time and a safety notice was released.
  • On 26 December 2025, the CCMT team took the decision to release a safety notification recall as it was judged as an increased risk towards motor vehicle safety. Volvo Cars can confirm there are no warranty claims or field or service reports, related to this defect in the U.S.
