There’s the sound of breaking glass in Detroit this morning as General Motors says that Dan Akerson steps down as chairman and CEO on 15 January 2014 with Mary Barra, 51, currently executive vice president, Global Product Development is elected by the Board of Directors to become the next CEO.

Treasury No Longer Owns GM Common Stock

Treasury in a statement said it recouped a total of $39 billion from the original GM investment. Taxpayers in 2009 gave GM $49.5 billion in loans ($50 billion including loans for the Supplier and Warranty Programs) in exchange for $2.1 billion in preferred stock and a 60.8% equity stake in the reorganized company. Economist Says Auto Bailouts Saved More than 4 Million Jobs

A newly released report by the Center for Automotive Research, aka CAR, says that the auto bailouts conducted during the 2009 by the U.S. federal government saved more than 4 million jobs. It also saved U.S. taxpayers or avoided the loss of $105.3 billion in transfer payments and the loss of personal and social insurance tax collections or 768% of the net investment of the thus far $11.8 billion. Macomb County Pol Touts Auto Recovery

Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel, 51, said the automotive sector is heading in new directions in Macomb County and pointed to recent “wins” involving the Detroit Three, who are among the county’s top employers. The Democrat, who lives off of taxpayers in 27 communities located just north of bankrupt Detroit, noted that automakers and suppliers have made $2 billion in investments during the past three years, and Macomb is home to more than 40,000 automotive industry jobs. Used Vehicles Sales Strong in December. Trucks in Demand

With 80% of all workers commuting in vehicles, 38,711,288 previously owned cars and trucks have changed title so far this year with a total value from all three channels based on transaction prices at $29.12 billion, up +7.8% compared $27.01 billion in the comparable period. NASCAR Buys Faltering Iowa Speedway

Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, NASCAR said it purchased Iowa Speedway. The agreement for an unspecified amount departs from the usual France family practice of gathering racetracks under the semi-independent International Speedway Corporation that controls Daytona, Homestead, Talladega and Watkins Glen among other premier venues.
