GM Recalls Buick and Chevrolet Hybrids for Fires
GM had previously performed a service action on the vehicles, contending there was no chance of fires. At least two fires subsequently occurred, and NHTSA inquires about a number of complaints prompted GM to reopen the defect investigation. Continue reading

U.S. DOT Publishes Distracted Driving Guidelines
The U.S. Department of Transportation finally released today distracted driving guidelines in an attempt to “encourage automobile manufacturers” to limit the distraction risk connected to electronic devices built into their vehicles, such as communications, entertainment and navigation devices. Chrysler Recalls Ram Pickup Trucks for Bad Parking Brakes
Chrysler Group will recall about 9,300 Ram pickup trucks because of defective parking brakes. In a statement just issued, Chrysler said that an internal audit of 2013 Ram 1500 pickups discovered a small number of vehicles whose parking brakes did not comply with mandated performance standards. Hyundai, Kia Recall More Than 1.8 Million Vehicles for Safety Defects
Hyundai Motor and Kia Motor are recalling more than 1.8 million car and crossover vehicles for bad stoplight switches and defective airbags. The most popular selling vehicles from the 2007 up through the 2013 model year are affected. In a required NHTSA filing just made public today, the South Korean automakers once known for poor quality said that a defective brake switch can cause the brake lights to fail or may keep the cruise control engaged even when the driver presses the brake pedal. Ford Recalls Explorer, Taurus, Lincoln MKS for Leaking Fuel Tanks
Ford is recalling 2012 Taurus, Lincoln MKS, and 2013 Explorer vehicles because the fuel tanks may have a “marginally sealed seam” in the side of the tank. As a result, the fuel tanks may not provide the expected strength during a crash. The tanks may also leak. The problem was originally discovered in Saudi Arabia. Continue reading

Nissan Recalls NV Vans for Shift Indicator Safety Defect
Nissan is recalling all of its NV vans built from the start of production in 2010 until this past January because the transmission shift indicator, aka PRNDLin auto slang, can point to the wrong gear. Nissan Recalls Popular 2013 Models for Bad Passenger Airbags
Nissan is recalling numerous 2013 model Altima, Leaf, Pathfinder, Sentra, and Infiniti JX35 vehicles because the passenger side airbag is defective. Sensors within the so-called passenger Occupant Detection System may have been manufactured out of specification for several months. This may cause the system to malfunction and permanently suppress the passenger airbag on some of Nissan’s most popular vehicles. Continue reading
