GM Earns $3.6 Billion in Q3 2023

General Motors (NYSE: GM) today reported third-quarter 2023 revenue of $44.1 billion, net income attributable to stockholders of $3.1 billion and EBIT-adjusted of $3.6 billion on global sales of 981,000 vehicles.* The $3.6 billion includes ~$(0.2) billion of labor disruption impact, which was before the UAW struck GM’s most profitable plant this morning. UAW Now on Strike at Mack Trucks in Three States

Mack Trucks and the UAW reached a tentative agreement minutes before the initial deadline on 1 October. UAW leadership recommended that members approve the deal. On Sunday 8 October Mack Trucks’ UAW members rejected the contract. UAW leadership then issued a strike notice to the company, citing “many topics [that] remain at issue, including wage increases, cost of living allowances (COLA), job security, wage progression, skilled trades, shift premium, holiday schedules, work schedules, health and safety, seniority, pension, 401(k), healthcare and prescription drug coverage, and overtime.” Continue reading

Labor Day – UAW Struggles Are Key to The American Dream

Let us pause here to remember and reflect on Walter P. Reuther (1907 – 1970). “There is no greater calling than to serve your fellow man. There is no greater satisfaction than to have done it well,” he famously said. Reuther built the United Automobile Workers into one of the most awakened and progressive forces in American history. A fierce champion of collective bargaining, Reuther also had a much larger vision of the American society then many of our mere politicians. He viewed the labor movement in the context of community – the whole community. Led by him the UAW fought for civil rights, health care, affordable housing, environmental protections among other things. Continue reading
